Oh, I *love* this museum!  Love, love, love it!  The ancient/early human exhibit is fascinating, informative, and unparalleled, as is the dinosaur/prehistoric animal exhibit on the top floor.  (Besides the fun and huge dinosaurs we all knew and loved as kids, there are the skeletons of *tons* of different/more obscure critters big and small to marvel over!)  It's wonderful to come in here and see the science behind earth and life in general, and it's one of those rare places that doesn't lose any of its magic from when you were a kid.  The building, the location, and the exhibits are all some of the best things that NYC has to offer; it's definitely a must-see place!

This is pretty simple.  If you are going to be spending any amount of time in NYC, you need to take a day and go to the American Museum of Natural History.  Yeah, I said a day.  You need at LEAST 4 hours to skim through it all.  That gives you about an hour per floor, which is the minimum amount of time you'll want to spend.  Even with kids, you'll find yourself spending a lot of time here because it's great fun for everyone.

We decided to buy a family membership to the Museum because we knew we would be coming back many times over (we have a four year old after all).

Little known tip: Go to the information desk and ask them for a sheet that explains what parts of the movie "Night at the Museum" are really found in the Museum and what parts aren't.

Yeah, ok, the food is expensive in the food court, but honestly it's not THAT bad.  They actually have some classy pasta dishes.  Really, they aren't ripping you off any more than a lot of the restaurants on the Upper East Side.  If you follow my advice, you're going to spend the day there, so just count on dropping $12/person on lunch.  It's the same as going to a ballgame or an amusement park.  However, the difference here is that you have a lot more tasty choices at the museum than at those parks.

For the kids:  Obviously check out the fourth floor that has the dinosaur bones.  Also, don't miss the Ocean room.  The different halls of Mammals are also really fun.  They probably won't care too much about the "Peoples" exhibits, especially if they are younger, but there is plenty to see for people of all ages.

You won't be sorry you took some time to see the AMNH.  Even if you see loads of school buses parked out front, don't let it deter you, it can comfortably accommodate thousands of people at the same time.

Simply put, this has something for everyone.  Unlike other reviewers who tend to like the anti Creationist slant of the museum, I have to take all of the HEAVY Evolution propoganda with a grain of salt.  If you are also a Creationist and you are worried about bringing your family to a place full of worldly teachings, look at it as an opportunity to discuss some of the things you don't agree with with your kids!

This grandiose and magnificent museum is well worth your time if you're in the city.  Don't try to see everything, it would take you days of nonstop exploration.  It's huge.  First of all, the area it's in is awesome.  I love the Upper West Side.  It's right near Central Park and has a much more serene atmosphere than touristy Midtown/Times Square.  The dinosaur exhibit is an absolute must-see.  Check out the cielophysis and the towering brontosaurus.  The hall of biodiversity is extremely interesting.  Make sure to pay attention to the whereabouts of your party because the size of this place is very conducive to losing people, especially in a dark room like the hall of biodiversity.  If you plan to see a planetarium show, see cosmic collisions, it's amazing.  I also visited the African peoples exhibit and the Asian peoples exhibit.  Everything there was great.   It was also very affordable.

The dioramas haven't changed since *I* was 8, but I love 'em!

Yes, David T: Dioramas are fantastic.   To Helen Y.: many other words (and things to see) too!

Something for everyone, always. Even when crowded, there's room.

Its relatively new exhibitions on evolution, even before the current Darwin one, are up-to-date and timely and are a must-see for those seeking  to refute creationists/intelligent design proponents.

And the Margaret Mead Film Fest in November every year is often good.

Dinosaur me, I can remember when admission was free.

Avoid weekends and major hols.

This museum is amazing.  I've been to this place so many times, and can still spend an entire day here.  I'm not going to go into detail about everything that's in there, you can look that up on countless sites.  Take a look at the pics to get a good idea of what's waiting for you there.

If you're in NY visiting, you really should go see this place.  This is definitely one of my favorite places in NYC.

Ever since I was a little girl  I've absolutely adored this tremendous museum that never seems to shrink the bigger I go.

Just the other day I took my friend to this sprawling collection of artifacts, and we had a really good time despite the fact that it was "Pay What You Wish Day" and crowded with truckloads of Day Campers.

If there are three things I must see while at the museum, they're the fossils of dinosaurs and ancient mammals (my favorite is the huge sauropod one sees when first walking into the main lobby,) the "stuffed" animals (especially all of those from Asia,) and the Hall of Biodiversity and Ocean Life (the blue whale always creeped me out.)

Other exhibits, such as those dealing with peoples of the world, are not particularly interesting to me as I'm not into anthropology. The meteorite section, replete with huge boulders, is a bit too boring and monotonous as well.

Also, whatever you do, avoid the disgusting food court. It's filled with nothing but overpriced crap, and even something as simple and recognizable as a bottle of soda is outlandishly expensive. Perhaps the new cafes they've added are better, but I suggest you keep your ticket ready, go outside for a hot dog, and come back in when the time is right.

All in all, it's a worthy trip that I think anyone should take their visiting relatives or friends to, or just explore on their own.  However, make sure to arrive at 10 'o clock, don't give the full suggested admission, and whatever you do, don't go on a weekend.

This is a must in NYC whether you've lived here or you're a tourist, all can benefit and enjoy a trip to the Natural History Museum. Their collections of artifacts and dinosaur bones are absolutely amazing. They have have a ton of dioramas and replica animals (including a life size blue whale!) and scenes which really give you a sense of what places and animals looked like throughout history which was awesome.

The admission here is suggested so you can give anything, I always feel too embarrassed to say I'm cheap/poor and give like the $3 or $5 I wish I could pay, but if you have more guts than me you can certainly do that, I usually pay anywhere from $10-15. I think the suggested admission is $20 or so (certainly no D.C. system of museums)/

i realize that as a nerd i should be a really big fan of this museum. in theory, i am a fan, however in practice this museum doesn't make sense.  this museum while beautiful and interesting, is hard to navigate. so many times i was trapped within exhibits, or walked to the end of something expecting it to be connected to another thing only to find that there was a plexi glass divider in the path i wanted to take.  that said, this is a great place to poke around no matter how old you are! one of my favorite dioramas was entitled 'how to get bitten by a snake', based on its title alone. if you're taking a train, check out the lovely mosaics(placed at varying heights on the walls, perhaps to ensure that even the youngest can enjoy them) in the subway stop...an interesting detail to add to your trip.

also-beware of imax movies if you are prone to motion sickness, or  in my case even if you are not prone to motion sickness.

While a tad confusing to navigate at first, that is really my only complaint.  This place is so much fun for all ages!  I loved that we could take pictures - goofy ones, at that, and feel really free to explore and learn at our own pace.  The animal and dinosaur exhibits were my favorite.  The space and earth exhibits were pretty cool too.

Tip: Get there early to avoid the crowds.

Epic, affordable, overwhelming in sheer size and variety of exhibitis.  Great for tourists, great for locals, great for kids, great for the elderly, and quite honestly posessing something for EVERYONE.  If you can't find something to learn, love, or expand yourself at the Museum of Natural History you simply are trying to be difficult.

Especially loved the dinosaur exhibit and the sea life....the blue whale was mesmerizing.  Also found the hall of minerals to be spectacular and the animal exhibits clever.  No hassel about pictures and large enough that you can get away from the crowd......fantastic.

One star off for three reasons:  #1) The 'extra charges' for many of the exhibits.  I realize the museum is self sustaining but considering its fame I really don't think they need to tag you for extra dollars for 5-6 different exhibits.  One specific "bonus" that costs extra would have been more acceptable.  #2)  The overrated space area that charges extra for seemingly everything.  #3)  The lack of interesting adult options in the gift stores.....a little too child focused for my taste.

Birth of Knowledge for Kids

I decided to come here even though I as not thinking of it.  But my friend had to get some sort of gift so I acquiesced grudgingly.  I'm a member of CAS in SF and also more into live specimens rather than freeze-dried taxidermy replicas in stiff pose.

Regardless, I am in awe of this amazing space and what it offers to the children and adults with spare time.  They were currently running a Horses exhibit (butterfly exhibit was not in season) and I found the Asian cultures exhibits most interesting.  The Pacific Northwest exhibit was quite extensive and I was very impressed with their direction in regards to that.

In addition to the vast galleries, they also have an excellent space set-up, where most of the visiting students were lining up for.

Due to the massive concrete walls, I had absolutely no cellphone reception  and unfortunately had to bail to meet a friend for lunch.  If you have time to spare, feel free to meander over to Central Park.  It's right across the street.

BEWARE ALL TOURISTS... NEVER EAT AT THE MUSEUM!

omg the food was sooooo overpriced and disgusting. i suggest getting a hot dog from the cart before you go in... save some money and your stomach!

Aside from the nasty food, this place was cool i like how you can get right on the train from there and the exhibits were amazing. I couldn't help but keep thinking about the movie Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller the entire time, but I definitely had a great time there.

I may be a little biased since I lived in DC and went to the natural history museum there every chance I got.  I have a background in anthropology and really love museums and go to them whenever I get a chance no matter what size city I am.

Here are my list of pros and cons for the AMNH.

Cons
1) A lot of the exhibits are tired and old. Dead birds in an uninteresting display?Same tired native americans who look like they've been standing in the same place since the AMNH opened. Boring and uninteresting.
2) Had to grab a snack for the 2 kids I was with. A plain hot dog was 3.50. Nutrigrain bars were $3. WTF. Seriously. This was movie theatre markup.

Pros
1) The suggested donation rather than admission like MoMA. I feel for all the people who paid the whole $15 suggested donation for this museum.
2) The dinosaurs were cool.

All in all, I give the AMNH a big "meh". I've been to museums all over the world and this is on par (minus the dinosaurs) with small town museums as far as the exhibits of the animals and native people go.

If you go, don't pay the $15 suggested admission. Pay something less. I paid $5 figuring it would be awesome and I'd join or something, but imho, it was about $3 too much.

I still have fond memories of coming here as a child.   We used to come every year to watch the annual Christmas show.  And I still love this place till this day.  There's tons of really cool stuff in the place. In addition to the really cool dinosaurs, there's also mammal replicas and other cool stuff.  Not to forget astronaut ice cream.

This is the only thing I sincerely care to see in New York.  That's not to say all the other NYC stuff is bad - it's not, it's New York for Christ's sake!  But when I head up there for whatever reason, I ALWAYS make time to come here.  Always.

You have mad awesome dinosaur and primitive mammal fossils in the same building as a kickass planetarium and a walkable time line of the entire universe.

For my money, I always buy the standard admission ticket w/ a planetarium show.  And when you are there, pull aside one of the employees that wander the floors - they are super knowledgeable and more than happy to talk to interested folks.  My boyfriend and I openly discussed kidnapping the elderly man that taught us more about the possibility that some dinosaurs were warm blooded.

And finally, you can pig the hell out on space ice cream.

Who doesn't enjoy life-sized models dressed in traditionally historical garb?  Or dinosaur fossils?  Or dioramas depicting 16th Century Peking?  Did I mention dinosaur fossils?  I've been to this museum several times, and it never fails to impress me. You can indulge in information for hours and NEVER get bored, although I have heard children utter the "I'm bored" declaration upon entering the lobby (are they not impressed by the ancient fossils in the lobby???)

The best part is that Museum of Natural History can cost you as little as 1 cent...that's right!  Most people (and I mean tourists) end up hawking the 15 or 20 dollar SUGGESTED entrance fee.  People, you DO NOT HAVE TO pay a lot of money to enter the museum.  Take advantage of one of the few inexpensive activities to do in New York City.

Whoa, the largest collection of actual dino fossils in the US, enough said!!  Seeing the size of T-Rex fossil displayed in the museum, I couldn't help but wonder if King Kong could really have beaten three of them all at once...  and for a girl he barely knew?  come on...

If you were once a little boy preoccupied with dino fantasies, this place will take you right back to childhood.

I also found their space exibit very informative and super intriguing.  How many of you know what you would weigh on a neutron star??  Now I know - 3.2 trillion pounds...

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I should just get the membership instead of buy the tickets each time when visiting. ha..
there are so much to see there, it takes so many visits and yet i still find new sections ( which I missed the previous times)
I dont know so much about the museum cafes, I am too cheap to pay $4.00 for a cupcake.
what else, my last visit  I went during a week day, and I noticed school buses parked outside the area, and lots of kids , but hey I am all for the school field trip and education..
thank you American Museum of Natural History!!

After my last two 1-star reviews, I felt that I should write a 5-star review of some place to balance out the negative energy. I don't like to write 1-star reviews. It makes me feel dirty. Anyway, the first place that popped into my head to write a lovely 5-star review for? Well gee, you are reading this review, aren't you?

I literally spent 4 hours here JUST on the dinosaur floor. This museum is saturated with information and things to look at. It reeks of facts and exhibits and just... STUFF... I LOVED IT. I felt like I was 5 years-old again.

I spent my first day in New York at this place and didn't regret it one bit. If there was anything I could give a negative star for it would be that it doesn't stay open late enough! There were whole sections of the museum that I didn't even get a chance to walk through.

I am literally laughing my ass off at the negative reviews of this place. Oh noes, CHILDREN! Oh noes, the layout was confusing! Oh noes, there was too much information on the placards! Oh noes, it was crowded!

Are you guys SERIOUS? If you hate children, can't read a map, can't get your lazy ass up early enough to beat the crowd, AND hate to learn then do the world a favor and stay inside and watch some reality shows on MTV or whatever it is that boring people do.

I wanted to use a word other than boring, but you know... gotta combat that negative energy!

...

I think I've been watching too much Oprah.

This is my favorite museum in the country.

I have been to this museum multiple times and still have not found an opportunity to explore the entire thing!

I suggest taking advantage of the docent led "highlights" tours if you are a tourist in a time crunch.  Since this could be an all day activity from open to close, a quick overview will help you find what is most interesting to you and allow you to come back for more in depth investigation.

Among my favorites are the replication of Lucy's bones, the gem collection, and the giant orb that gives the size perspective on everything from star systems to blood cells.

Only exhibition i was uninspired by way unfortunately the mythical creatures exhibit about 6 months ago.  i had high hopes for its contents, however found myself bored in a landscape of sculpted creatures.

Wasn't impressed with this museum.

I don't care that it covers 4 city blocks and feature dinosaur bones and other old shit.  Maybe it was because I was pooped and my feet ached from walking around in sneakers that seemed comfy until they bee-bopped  from one end of Manhattan to the other?  Or maybe it was b/c the museum was packed and I grew weary of assholes practically running me over then jumping in front of me as I was trying to peep an exhibit (make that a replica of something)?  Mostly I think I just expected more.  Wish we'd gone to one of the art museums instead...

This is my Disneyland...

I was on a vacation tour in New York and one of the stops was the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which I promptly decided to skip out on in lieu of checking this place out, since I have a much larger fascination with natural history than art history.

This review is only for the Dinosaur Halls and related exhibits. Not only do they have an impressive collection of full skeletons on display, they have additional areas dedicated to other vertebrate and nonvertebrate species that also lived during the Mesozoic Era. For the dinosaurs, they have two enormous halls dedicated to them: a section for the Saurischian dinosaurs and one for the Ornithiscian dinosaurs. Beautiful fossils of Triceratops, Styracosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Corythosaurus, Stegosaurus, and numerous other species. The other side had impressive skeletons of Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus, to name a few.

These, and all the other prehistoric animals (fishes, amphibians, reptile, mammals) all took me about 3 hours to view. I felt that even three hours was not enough time for me to thoroughly enjoy even one section. I could spend an entire month in this museum and still not see everything. Did I mention I was like a giddy little schoolgirl the whole time here?

I was so amazed by this museum that this place alone would warrant another trip back to New York City.

Oh yeah, the lobby with the Barosaurus and Allosaurus will take your breath away. I had to hold back tears.

The Met what?

I could live here.  They have enough room.  I'd especially love to reside near the planetarium or the space wing of the museum.  Maybe I could be like the IKEA guy who just camps out there.  Besides, it takes weeks, if not months, to see everything in that place.  I wonder if anyone successfully spent the night there....hmmm..

I have a confession.

I love Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History.  The first time I saw him (the intro video they play before you go into the Planetarium), I was hooked.  I now watch Nova ScienceNOW almost religiously.

Anyway, enough about confessions.  The AMNH was part of the CityPass we had when we visited NYC.  So of course we went.  It's amazing to say the least.  I loved the dinosaur exhibits, with all of the ancient bones and everything, including this MONSTROUS turtle, like, the biggest I've ever seen.  It was awesome.

One of my favorite parts was the Rose Center, and how it compares the relative size of everything in the Universe.  It's things like that that make me wish I was smarter so I could be an astrophysicist.

So ya, basically, I love this place, and I'm definitely coming back next time I'm in NYC

We came here specifically because of our kids - who, of course, wanted to go to the "Night at the Museum" museum.

I am SO sorry we went there on our last day, thinking we can hit up all the "movie sights" and be in and out in...say 20 minutes?  Boy were we wrong!!  I could've stayed at that place the whole day!  Luckily, the info desk had a little cheat sheet for us on what to expect at the museum - like certain things in the movie that were NOT at the museum, and ones that were there and where to find them.

I can't wait to go back to NYC just to go back to this museum!  I really regret not giving ourselves enough time to enjoy everything it had to offer!

My favorite museum!  Absolutely love love love every exhibit here from biodiversity to ancient cultures to dinosaurs to mammals of every continent.  If I could, I would spend all day here but unfortunately there are so many darn kids running around screaming it makes the experience just a tad irritating.  When I say kids, I don't mean families with kids.  I mean entire 1st grade classes with 2 chaperones.  I wish I had spent more time upstairs with the dinosaurs but there must have been 10 different schools up there and the collective high pitched chatter/screaming was getting to me.

I love this museum so much and I never pay over 1 dollar.

If you watch a comedy movie with Ben Stiller as a security guard and Robin William in the museum, they shot here.  I am not gonna tell you that you will find animals, dinosaurs and etc.

Not that I care, not that important. Not that I don't want to tell you that you don't need to pay what they ask.  Just pay 1 buck.

Tell me in NYC, can you get anything for 1 dollar?  Oh now you know.

I love the AMNH!  I want to live here.  Or, at least be allowed to take naps in the giant ocean life exhibit hall.

Oh, word to the wise if you're a student, the admission price is *suggested*!!!  If you are a truly po' student of the graduate variety (like me), pay what you can afford and don't feel guilty about it even if the woman at the ticket counter says, "I'm *not* trying to guilt you into paying full price."  She is.  Don't fall for it.  Plus, if you fall for her guilt inducing tactics (she's a pro) your friends will make fun of you for a long time.  Be strong.

This place is always going to be my favorite just because of its sheer size and the enormous variety of its exhibitions. A great date joint since what you see together always inspires laughter, shock, awe or appreciation (see: the ancient people's wing). Lots of dark corners to canoodle and beautiful views from the top floor rotunda. The gift shop is also ginormous.  It actually makes a decent place to buy an unusual gift for somebody hard to shop for. Drawbacks: food, people and lines. The food court is badly laid-out and encourages congestion. Food is plentiful and not half-bad but don't expect gourmet. To avoid the madness, head to the fourth floor, for a more cafe-style set up. There will be lots of people too, particularly of the less-than-four-feet-tall variety. Be ready for strollers and screaming. Lots of teens and tourists as well, compelled to take pictures of EVERY FRIKKIN THING they see (which baffles me) and tends to spoil the moment. Lines will also, therefore, be long. Skip the entrance by the subway and exit for the main entrance, which has longer lines but which move faster. Nearby Central Park is a great place to go after and I also suggest Calle Ocho for nearby classy Cuban fare.

I hadn't been in a while- years, infact and coming back made me feel like a little kid again. I love this museum. If you have a chance try to find to wolves- they are in a hallway and have dark, blue lighting. It looks like they are running right at you! The museum staff is really helpful, although when I was looking for the wolves they guard had no idea what I was talking about- but then i found it!!!! I LOVE this place- whenever I have a free afternoon I try to go- walking through by yourself is so much better than going with 15 other 5th graders back in grade school!

Suffered a bit in comparison to the Smithsonian (I mean, that place is FREE for god's sake and they got the Hope Diamond that old Rose dropped into the ocean at the end of Titanic).

However, extra stars for having the most useless waste of material and space, the Hayden Sphere, ever. Actually, it's quite awesome to have it as a relative size marker for their exhibit. Where it becomes useless is when you go inside. A three minute, craptastic movie featuring the voice of Maya Angelou. In all seriousness though, the walk out of the Hayden Sphere is cool, taking you on a journey from the big bang through the history of the Universe, up to the history of the human race, marked by the width of a single strand of hair.

As you can tell, I was really enthralled by the Hayden Sphere. Thankfully, I hadn't seen that Ben Stiller movie prior to visiting, cause that really would have ruined everything.

While it's not often that I think DC can top an NYC attraction, this is one of those cases.  The Smithsonian is definitely better.

I think this museum was cool.  But I enjoy being spoiled by a free museum with essentially the same style exhibits.

Pros:
1. The planetarium is great.  It was fairly recently renovated I think.
2. The H20 exhibit was really cool and I was inspired to read most of the placards.

Cons:
1. The cost.  I hated paying as much as I did to see the exhibits
2. The scheduling.  It's irritating to be told when I have to see things.
3. The precious gem exhibit was not as good as DC
4. The IMAX is not actually an IMAX.  It's a normal movie screen.  False advertising.

One great thing I realized at the end of my day:
Don't pay attention to your scheduled times.  I found that I could adjust the times a bit.  Maybe they weren't paying attention, but by the end, I just went whenever I was near the exhibit.

"Humans are both mammals and primates, because they are descended from both mammals and primates."

Ok, i may not have gotten that quote exactly right, but it's near enough to express my frustration with the signs and placards at the AMNH. I spent about as much time making snide comments about stupid (or outright wrong) statements on the signage as i did staring in total awe at the displays.

With the exception of a salaciously posed half-naked model of a woman in one of the regional humans exhibits, this museum is amazing. From full-size models of whales to exemplars of hundreds of different gems and minerals to diagrams of cross-cousin marriage traditions, there may well be one of everything here.

It just breaks my heart a little to imagine children learning history, science, or even language and grammar from the posted information. (Which is the only reason i'm docking a star from the rating.)

Who doesn't enjoy a natural history museum?? AMNH, Field Museum and NHM of Los Angeles County are my top three favorites in this country. Like the latter two, AMNH is a highly educational and wholly fascinating establishment that's really appropriate for anyone, at any age.

Note 1: Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes...

Note 2: The admission rates are the "suggested" amounts, but it could get pricey depending on the number of exhibits you're signing up for (including Space Show, IMAX film, etc).

Note 3: I'm deducting 0.5 stars, because this place is WAY too crowded!!

Man this place is cool. It's like traveling the world in a time machine. This is a great way to spend a day - and it will take you the whole day to see everything. I suggest getting there early and then taking a nice long lunch break halfway through. We went a little late so trying to see everything was a bit more challenging. We were pretty pooped by the end of our trip. Also, the lobby area is seriously disorganized and crazy, so coming a little earlier may help you to avoid some of this or to have the time it takes to check coats, visit bathrooms and get your tickets.

If I hadn't gotten hopelessly lost in this cavernous museum, I would be giving it 5 stars. But seriously, it shouldn't be so hard to find an exit, stairs, or a restroom. Although I suppose my own incompetent map-reading skills could be partly to blame... whatever. This place is huge!

I love dinosaurs. I love the ugly fish that can weigh up to 220 pounds and have five rows of teeth and scary looking fangs. I love all the descriptions next to the ex
